Litter Picking Queensway Park

WELLINGBOROUGH ECO GROUP AND WELLIE WOMBLES

This month’s Two Hour Tidy Up kicks off the Big Green Week!

The litter pick takes place on this Saturday morning (24th September) and we are litter picking the Queensway Park and the cycle path into Park Farm Industrial Estate. We will set up a recycling station outside our ECO HUB at Glamis Hall from 9:30 to litter pick between 10am-12 midday.

This location has been chosen because we also have a Climate Café at ECO HUB (9am-1pm). As a group we have tidied up this area before, but unfortunately due to some messy people there’s plenty to do. Here are some photos to get you in the mood…

To help us and keep us safe at this and future litter picks, Wellingborough Eco Group have purchased some litter pickers, hi-vis vests and safety equipment including road signs, so everything is provided but please bring your own gloves if you can.

North Northants Council will take away the litter we pick, hand sanitiser will be available. We will be joined by Wellie Wombles and many other volunteers, so do join in, bring your friends and family, ALL WELCOME!

Wellingborough Repair Café Relaunches

What do you do with a broken toaster? Or with a bike when the wheel runs out of true? Or with a jumper full of moth holes?

Bin it? No way!

Wellingborough Eco Group is organising a Repair Café on Saturday the 8th October 2022, at ECO HUB at Glamis Hall for All!

On Saturday 8th of October everything centres on making repairs! Starting from 9am and ending at 12 noon in ECO HUB at Glamis Hall, Goldsmith Rd, Wellingborough, NN8 3RU, various volunteer repair experts will be available to help repair your broken items, free of charge. Tools and materials will also be on hand.

People visiting the Repair Café can bring along their broken items from home. Toasters, lamps, hair dryers, clothes, bikes, toys, any portable item that is broken is welcome, apart from microwaves and CRT devices such as old style televisions, and we will do our best to fix it. We will operate a booking system, so you will be given a time slot to avoid waiting too long. Book your time slot now on our Repair Café page!

“By promoting repairs, Wellingborough Eco Group wants to help reduce mountains of waste. This is absolutely necessary! We throw away piles of stuff in the UK, even things which have practically nothing wrong with them, and which could easily be used again after a simple repair. Unfortunately, many people have forgotten that they can have things repaired. Our Repair Café wants to change all that.”

Judy Sumner

Our Repair Café is also meant to put neighbours in touch with each other in a new way, to discover that a lot of know-how and practical skills can be found close to home. If you repair a bike, a hair dryer or a pair of trousers, together with a previously unfamiliar neighbour, you look at that person in a different light the next time you run into them on the street. Jointly making repairs can lead to making new friends in the neighbourhood.

Wellingborough Eco Group points out that repairs can save money and resources, and can help minimise CO2 emissions. But above all, our Repair Café just wants to show how much fun repairing things can be, and how easy it often is.

Repair Café International Foundation

The Repair Café concept arose in Amsterdam, the Netherlands, in 2009, and was formulated by Martine Postma, at the time a journalist/publicist. In 2010, she started the Repair Café International Foundation (see Repaircafe.org/en). This foundation provides professional support to local groups around the world wishing to start their own Repair Café. Yes we already held a Repair Café in Wellingborough, but we have now joined the Repair Café International Foundation and are running our Café according to their guidelines.

Wellingborough Eco Group is organising a Repair Café from Saturday the 8th October 2022 on a regular basis at ECO HUB, Glamis Hall for All, on the second Saturday of the month 9am-12noon.

Swap Shop at Animals in Need Open Day!

Join us on Sunday, 11th September, 12-4 at Animals In Need Northamptonshire, Little Irchester, for their Summer Open Day. We will be there with lot’s of great second hand items, all for swaps or donations…

There will be loads of great stalls, including vegan food and a house plant stall too, all in aid of quite possibly the best charity in the county! Every penny raised will go to looking after the animals.

Do join us for great swaps, food and bargains, see you there!

Repair Cafes re-start this Saturday!

Wellingborough Eco Group and Glamis Hall host Repair Cafes, during the Indoor Car Boot Sales, both of which re-start on Saturday 10th September from 9am -12 midday, plus there’s a Baby Bring and Buy Sale at ECO HUB!

Repair Cafes are community events that match people who need stuff fixed with people who like fixing things. Repair Cafes are completely non-commercial. There are no promises and no guarantees, but if something can be saved the repairers will give it their best efforts. Repairers are always keen to teach you how to do the repair – or at least have you watch while they do it.

There is no charge for entry or repair but donations are gratefully received and help pay for costs. You can basically bring anything you can carry that will not make a mess in the venue. Here are some suggestions:

A bicycle, clothing in need of repair, small electrical or electronic appliances, lamps, toys, mobile phones, laptops, printers, items that need gluing, a clean/repair etc.

Whatever it is, it might not even be broken – just dirty, and you don’t know how to clean it without damaging it – or you can’t work out how to use it without the manual – bring it along.

Plus there’s more…

Come too for the Indoor Car Boot Sales and Baby Bring and Buy Sale at our new ECO HUB! There will be loads of bargains to be had from the many stalls at the Indoor Car Boot Sale; and if that wasn’t enough, Wellingborough Swap Shop has a massive Baby Bring and Buy Sale on at ECO HUB next door!

Come to get something fixed and get some bargains. See you on Saturday Morning!
