Volunteering Guidance Notes
Volunteering for Wellingborough Eco Group is all about you and what we can all do environmentally locally in a friendly and positive way. This group is open to everyone and aims to work with everyone. We do not ask what you cannot do, everyone is equally valued. We work with a can do spirit to help improve our town and surrounding area’s environment, to reduce, reuse and recycle items that would otherwise end up in landfill, and to help local people reduce their carbon footprints.
Here are some guidelines:
- Your safety is be our top priority, those not complying with safety guidelines (such as washing hands before touching food or deliberately endangering others) will not be allowed to carry out the task. Safety guidelines should be displayed where appropriate (litter picking below)
- If you need directions, have an accident or have any questions, ask the person who is leading the activity or project; or if needed call Jonathan on 07311 705705. If you have any issues any committee member can be contacted by email.
- When litter picking:
- Always maintain a minimum of one metre distance from other people to avoid any accidents. This is roughly the length of your picker.
- Never pick up sharp objects, including needles or glass. Report to North Northants Council if found.
- Don’t attempt to move large items or clear up fly tipping, report to North Northants Council if found.
- Don’t put yourself or others at risk, avoid rivers and busy roads.
- Do not litter pick private land unless you have permission and they have agreed to dispose the litter you collect.
- Inform Wellingborough Eco Group/Wellie Wombles and North Northamptonshire Council where your collected litter bags have been left so that they can be collected. This can be done on our Bag Report page.
- When using, borrowing or returning borrowed equipment, including litter pickers, gardening tools or equipment at ECO HUB, make sure that it has been checked and accounted for. If there are any issues with equipment please report to project leader or person who checked it before use.
- If in doubt, don’t do it. Your safety always comes first. This goes for everything including litter picking, but also all activities at our Community Allotment, with our Natures Rangers, at the Repair Cafe or whilst volunteering at ECO HUB.
- Negativity, prejudice and nastiness will not be tolerated. We do not treat people differently, everyone is welcome to join in with our activities (except at children’s groups, see next point) Respect that we are all different, treat everyone as you would like to be treated.
- The only access restrictions are at children’s groups for everyone’s safety, where parents or responsible adults must accompany all minors. Children without an adult and adults without children attending the group, will not be allowed in.
- The only mandatory training is Food safety training, if you are handling or preparing food. At our Happy Cafes and Food Sharers there will always be someone who has been trained.
- Hand washing facilities and/or hand sanitiser will be available at all of our activities.
- All volunteers will be shown what to do in an emergency, including where fire escapes, extinguishers and first aid equipment are. These will also be signposted. Emergencies must be reported to the relevant services and any accidents must be recorded. Any safety issues must also be reported to a committee member.
