Today’s Advent Calendar window opens for our friends and partners at Glamis Hall, to shine some light on their recycling schemes. Glamis Hall have teamed up with TerraCycle to give local people the opportunity to be able to recycle lots of everyday things that would otherwise end up in landfill.
Don’t you just hate it when you throw anyway a crisp packet or toothpaste into the black bin, as they cannot be accepted in the green bin? Well here is some great news from Jo Peploe, Glamis Hall Centre Manager, who explains all about the recycling services that they offer:
A host of products and packing that can’t be recycled at home, can be recycled at Glamis Hall in Wellingborough. Crisp packets, stamps, bras, batteries, toothbrushes and toothpaste tubes, pens and correction fluid containers, and some home hygiene packaging can all be taken to their community centre on Goldsmith Road.
They are open between 8am until 4pm Monday to Friday and 9am till 12 midday during their Indoor Car Boot sales on the 2nd Saturday of the month between September and May. Other times by arrangement, call 01933 677326. Information sheets are available for each scheme below:
Today’s Advent Calendar opens a window for The Daylight Shop at 2 Cambridge Street, Wellingborough. They are your local charity shop selling an array of goods, preloved and recycled for your enjoyment. They have a great selection of vinyls and cds; books and clothes. Their bric-a-brac section is a treasure trove waiting to be explored.
All proceeds from the shop go to keeping the Daylight Centre open for the homeless and vulnerable, providing a place for a shower, a meal, and advice. It also means that the Wellingborough Foodbank is able to provide food parcels for those on universal credit, homeless and unemployed.

The Daylight Centre Fellowship is an independent local charity in Wellingborough. They strive to help people in Wellingborough and the surrounding districts of North Northamptonshire in meeting personal challenges that range from complex mental health issues, drug and alcohol abuse, learning difficulties, to homelessness or just feeling fragile, isolated and alone.
Wellingborough Foodbank is one of the Daylight Centre’s services, and is designed to help individuals and families in Wellingborough and District who are in crisis. The aim of the Foodbank is to provide people in proven need with basic food and other essential items for a short time until the crisis is resolved or until the appropriate agencies are in a position to assist.
The food which they distribute is donated by many individuals and local organisations; churches, temples and mosques, schools, the public at supermarkets, local businesses and other local groups.
The Daylight Shop is open Tuesday Wednesday Friday and Saturday from 8.30 until 4pm. All donations are gratefully received. Pop in in for a bargain!
Today’s Advent Calendar window opens for Superdrug and their medicine packet recycling programme. With little packs, big impact, as their slogan; they turn your empty medicine blister packets into donations for Marie Curie, when you recycle them at their pharmacy counter!
Once collected, the empty blister packets are sent off to Terracycle, separated by polymer type and cleaned (if necessary). The material is then extruded into plastic pellets to make new recycled products. Marie Curie receives a donation of £1 for each kilo of empty medicine blister packets collected. Any brand of empty medicine blister packets are accepted.
You can take back your blister packs to the Wellingborough branch in the Swansgate Shopping Centre, plus they also recycle batteries and electrical equipment (WEEE Recycling) so you can drop off those at the same time. Today, our Advent Calendar window opens for a brand new local coffee house with international flair, style and flavour. It’s called UGLY MUG, they are opposite Tresham College on Church Street, and they are eco-friendly! The proprietor, Jonathan Ekins, has created a coffee house that stands out in so many ways.
The first thing that you experience as you enter UGLY MUG, is the spellbinding smell of coffee, swiftly followed by the feeling that you are in a European café. Even the price board looks continental. Seating is available on three levels and is designed with people from all walks of life in mind, be it work spaces, chill out seating or lunch with your loved ones.

They pride themselves that they only serve the finest locally roasted coffee, and that means no instant, no express and no pods. It’s not only coffee that has been sourced from a local supplier, they also have a local baker who bakes all of their bread and cakes. The coffee shop uses reusable plates and mugs, and offers bamboo reusable takeaway cups and recycled packaging too.
A wide selection of freshly prepared sandwiches are available, including vegan and vegetarian options. Vegan coffee is served too, including a fantastic oat milk latte, soya and almond milks are also available, so whoever you are, they have you covered.

With today’s Advent Calendar, a window opens for a local charity shop, Barnardo’s Wellingborough, who are offering Christmas gifts with a difference; and while things may look a little different this year we think it’s even more important to make it extra special. It’s time to sprinkle some sustainable Christmas dust on things and create all of those festive feels and stepping into a more eco-friendly Christmas.
Shopping pre-loved may not be your first thought when it comes to Christmas shopping, but you can something incredibly unique and extra special. Barnardo’s Wellingborough is a treasure trove full of amazing pre-loved gift ideas. From vintage and one off pieces, unique homeware, and a huge selection of books and toys. There really is something for everyone! Here Alise shows you around the store and tells you a bit more bout Barnardo’s:
Barnardo’s transforms the lives of the most vulnerable children in Northamptonshire and across the UK through the work of their services, campaigns, and research expertise. The charity believes they can bring out the best in every child, whether the issue is child poverty, sexual exploitation, disability, or domestic violence. They help young people leaving care, children with a parent in prison, and provide early intervention for families struggling to cope. Today’s Advent Calendar Window opens for Made With Many! They are a community-led arts programme covering Wellingborough and Corby, which produces events and activities designed to surprise, delight and inspire. They have received funding from the National Lottery for their programme of cultural activities in Wellingborough from 2020 until 2023.
The programme aims to encourage more people than ever before to take the lead in experiencing, creating and taking part in high-quality arts and cultural activities. Through conversations with local people and community decision-making panels, Made With Many puts the community at the heart of commissioning artists and producing new and exciting events, including two activities that are happening now:
Wild Winter Challenge: For families with under 5s
To brighten up the winter period and give families with children under 5 something to do with the kids during the COVID-19 restrictions, Made With Many have teamed up with Home-Start Wellingborough & District, Northamptonshire Children’s Trust and the Northamptonshire Strong Start Team for the three month Wild Winter Challenge. Several families in and around Wellingborough have received creativity packs, and for other families who want to get involved, all materials are low cost so you can take part online too by watching the videos available on this website. Each month there will be three Wild Winter Challenge activities released online.
You don’t have to be creative to get involved – the activities have been designed by Jodie and Harriet from The Wild Tribe, who will talk you through what you can do in the videos available on this page. There’s a mixture of making, stories, and things for the kids to try so hopefully you’ll find something you will all enjoy this winter!

Made With Many Christmas Packs – Wellingborough
Here is another new project to brighten up the winter period, and keep people’s spirits up during the Covid-19 restrictions. Made with Many are distributing 300 Christmas Activity Packs through partners, including Northamptonshire Libraries, the Daylight Centre, One Wellingborough and various community organisations.

The packs include fun activities (for any age group) to enjoy customising your own crackers, writing your own joke or friendly message and making a Christmas hat. Something to share over a meal, give as a gift or spread some happiness this Christmas! Each pack contains sufficient materials to make several crackers and hats.
A limited number of packs are available to book online and will be delivered by hand in the week commencing 14th December. One pack is available per household within the borough of Wellingborough.

Food for Thought have food, cleaning, personal hygiene products and accessories for sale. Kerry, the new shop’s owner, gave us a tour of her emporium, and we videoed it for you. Here is Kerry telling us all about the products available at Food for Thought:
Kerry has opened her ‘zero-waste emporium’ in Nene Court, Wellingborough, to reduce plastic pollution & celebrate locally made. Their motto is more joy with less waste!
At Food for Thought, you can buy loose and eco friendly goods, such as food stuffs, self-care and cleaning products. You simply fill, weigh and pay for what you need. So save your jars and bottles. Wash them out and refill at Food for Thought!

Did you know that there are over 20 allotment associations in the borough of Wellingborough! Wherever you live there’s one nearby and with today’s Advent Calendar we are opening our window for them.
You can rent a small plot for between £30-£40 a year and it can be a very rewarding pastime. There are many benefits, including physical exercise, mental wellbeing, healthy eating, reducing food miles, social interaction and family bonding. They’re wonderful places where you can listen to the birds singing, breathe in the fresh air, feel the sun on your skin and of course enjoy the fruits of your labour.
No allotment is complete without recycling. A compost bin or heap of some kind will not only do they give you somewhere to dispose of your weeds, but also provide valuable compost free of charge. Water butts can be linked to shed rooves to catch the rain; and of course lots of old things come in useful on your plot, you can use wood to make your bean canes, or like on our header image an old trampoline! You can even use your old bath at your allotment, it’s perfect for growing carrots in.
At our Community allotment, we are making a plot that for the community to give people the chance to share skills and to grow plants. Together, we will grow plants, fruit and veg on it for local community organisations. It is on Ladywell allotments in Wellingborough.
